Summary

Dani and Eden Rivera were both born to kill dragons, but the sisters couldn’t be more different。 For Dani, dragon slaying takes a back seat to normal high school life, while Eden prioritizes training above everything else。 Yet they both agree on one thing: it’s kill or be killed where dragons are concerned。

Until Dani comes face-to-face with one and forges a rare and magical bond with him。 As she gets to know Nox, she realizes that everything she thought she knew about dragons is wrong。 With Dani lost to the dragons, Eden turns to the mysterious and alluring sorcerers to help save her sister。 Now on opposite sides of the conflict, the sisters will do whatever it takes to save the other。 But the two are playing with magic that is more dangerous than they know, and there is another, more powerful enemy waiting for them both in the shadows。

A really good ya fantasy。 I enjoyed the representation, however wish the mental health depiction was better。 It wasn't very good in my opinion and was glossed over。 I also didn't exactly like eden and to me it felt like her character didn't experience any positive growth。 I really enjoyed everything else about the book though。 A really good ya fantasy。 I enjoyed the representation, however wish the mental health depiction was better。 It wasn't very good in my opinion and was glossed over。 I also didn't exactly like eden and to me it felt like her character didn't experience any positive growth。 I really enjoyed everything else about the book though。 。。。more

I enjoyed most of this book。 I don't usually like low fantasy books and don't read them often。 However, I loved the way this book painted the divide between everyday life and dragon-y life。The ending was a bit weird though, it felt like many loose ends weren't tied up but I would still recommend the book。 I enjoyed most of this book。 I don't usually like low fantasy books and don't read them often。 However, I loved the way this book painted the divide between everyday life and dragon-y life。The ending was a bit weird though, it felt like many loose ends weren't tied up but I would still recommend the book。 。。。more

4。8 stars。 I really loved every single thing about this book (except for one little detail)。 TLDR: Stunningly grounded in reality for such a magical fantasy book。 By this I mean: sisters are real, joy and guilt, manipulation and history, generational trauma and new horizons- these are all real things to be found in Fire with FireThings I loved (almost everything): The secret life of dragon slayers and sorcerers in the modern world。 Sisters who love each other and yet inevitably struggle to measu 4。8 stars。 I really loved every single thing about this book (except for one little detail)。 TLDR: Stunningly grounded in reality for such a magical fantasy book。 By this I mean: sisters are real, joy and guilt, manipulation and history, generational trauma and new horizons- these are all real things to be found in Fire with FireThings I loved (almost everything): The secret life of dragon slayers and sorcerers in the modern world。 Sisters who love each other and yet inevitably struggle to measure up to the other。 The badass Rivera family business。 Vivid intersections between magic and modern life。 The entirely at-odds perspectives of Dani and Nox that assimilate into necessary cooperation。 Real friendship。 Complicated friendship。 Magic and BAD MAGIC。 And of course BAD IDEAS。 And especially: the Mexican-Scottish Rivera family。 Eden and Dani are Riveras to the core, and yet have a different connection to their culture than most Latin@s in media。 Sure, their mother was too busy passing along the Rivera slayer legacy to teach them Spanish。 But they still learned。 In fact, they learned the same way I did, by taking Spanish as an elective in school。 They can understand all the scattered Spanish spoken by family and friends。 To me, seeing that reality reflected probably meant the most。Also I surprisingly liked the rock-climbing elements of both slayer training and Dani's summer job (I'm not a rock climber, which is why I was surprised)Thing I didn't like: SPOILER for that one thing and several related elements。(view spoiler)[ Kieran, the 200 year old immortal that Dani gets inevitably mixed up with。 I know, I know, she's immortal now too。 But stilL! He's got a 200 year head start on her, a literal high schooler。 The second I heard his little white-streaked black hair appear I had a bad feeling。I really appreciate and actually like the way he's dealt with in the story。 However。。。 yeah I did not care for his presence in the story。 FWF is so full of platonic and familial love with Dani and Eden's family and friends that giving Dani a 200 year old immortal to crush on and begin to fall for seemed almost unnecessary。 You know that TikTok about having to accept 200 year age gaps in YA books。。。 yeah lol。 (hide spoiler)]My thoughts while reading this:"I'm only 20% in, and the action is about to heat up and I just。。。 LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS BOOK ALREADY。 See: The family dynamics and tension; real friendship; EXTREMELY VALID SIBLING THINGS; and (surprisingly) the rock-climbing elements。 I also got a lot of warm and fuzzy feminist feelings from the book, clearly intentional! And as a Latine reader, this book already makes my heart sing :)!!!*Chef's kiss* *Chef's kiss*I LOVE THIS BOOK SO MUCH" 。。。more

Dani and Eden are dragon-hunting sisters which causes a problem when Dani bonds with a dragon。This turned out to be too YA for me。 I skim-read about a hundred pages and decided to call it quits。

I really enjoyed Fire With Fire by Destiny Soria! I love a good dragon story and this one delivered! Fire with Fire is about two sisters, Dani and Eden, who although have shared a similar upbringing with the same goal and values, couldn't be more different from each other。 Born into a family of dragon slayers, Dani and Eden have been rigorously brought up to fight and kill dragons。 Everything changes when Dani meets the dragon Nox where a bond is created between them changing the course of both their lives forever。I thoroughly enjoyed reading Fire with Fire。 Before reading this, I was in a slum Fire with Fire is about two sisters, Dani and Eden, who although have shared a similar upbringing with the same goal and values, couldn't be more different from each other。 Born into a family of dragon slayers, Dani and Eden have been rigorously brought up to fight and kill dragons。 Everything changes when Dani meets the dragon Nox where a bond is created between them changing the course of both their lives forever。I thoroughly enjoyed reading Fire with Fire。 Before reading this, I was in a slump and it has wholeheartedly dragged me out of it。 Despite preferring Dani as a character, I loved reading the development of both characters from their own perspectives, with each sister being strong in their own way。 Although romance is obviously a theme within the story, the main focus is on family, sisterhood and friendship which was a pleasant change from most books I've read recently。 A simple cast of characters that was easy to keep up with while not missing out on details that help you get to know them。 Beautiful descriptions of scenery that I could picture so vividly。 Overall, thoroughly enjoyed and recommended。 。。。more

No one is sadder than me that I didn’t end up absolutely falling in love with this book。 I read Destiny Soria’s debut last year and absolutely fell in love, so I was really looking forward to seeing where she went with her sophomore novel。 Plus, it has dragons!! Who wouldn’t be excited to read about dragons? But even beyond that, this book had a lot of things that I expect to love。 I love contemporary fantasy where the magical world interacts with the real world in fun and interesting ways, I love reading about complex family relationships, I love books centered around siblings。 By all accounts, I should have loved it。 And I think I would have, if literally any of the elements had developed beyond the concepts introduced in the synopsis。 But they really weren’t。 This was especially obvious with the worldbuilding, which was never developed beyond the basic concept of “the magical people think dragons are bad, but are they?” which is literally something that’s introduced in the synopsis。 I think one thing that really frustrated me about the worldbuilding is that the author never explains why things are the way they are, which makes it really hard for the world to feel real。 It was like the now of the world was established, but a lot of the history was missing, so the events and reasons that had led to the current status quo were never explained。 And in my opinion, the history of a world is what makes it feel more real and believable, so the fact that we were missing it with this book made me look at the world a lot more skeptically。 In a similar vein, I also wasn’t a huge fan of the magic system。 Mostly because it just,,, didn’t make a lot of sense to me? However, I will acknowledge that this could just be a me thing。 I feel like the author was trying to go for a more vague magic system with this book, which is definitely something that can work for a lot of books!! I just don’t think that it’s something that worked for this book, because so much of the plot in this book revolved around manipulating magic in supposedly new ways, but we were never told what the old rules for magic in this world were。 Also, the sorcerers’ magic seems pretty much limitless, at least from what I gathered, which I think really harmed the plot because, since there weren’t clear limits to the magic, it felt like the sorcerers could just fix the biggest conflict in the book with the wave of a hand but they just,,, didn’t。 I also think that the magic system being underdeveloped really harmed both of our main characters, but especially Eden。 A lot of Eden’s arc has to do with her interactions with magic and I think it was really harmed by the lack of clarity within the magic system。 I also just think that Eden’s arc was paced really badly and her character, in general, was inconsistent。 I’m really sad because her arc had so much potential and I could see where the author wanted to take it, but the outcome just didn’t end up being satisfying for me because it was so badly paced/plotted。 While we’re on the topic of characters, I will say that I enjoyed Dani’s arc slightly more than I enjoyed Eden’s?? Mainly because I feel like the pacing of that one was at least executed better than Eden’s and the progression like,,, made sense for the most part。 However, I still wasn’t a huge fan of it?? I think it fell a little flat to me, especially in the second half of the book and there were moments in the second half of the story where Dani’s development seemed like it had completely disappeared which left me ?? So, basically, I wasn’t a huge fan of either of the main characters。 Honestly, my favorite characters were probably Tomás (who deserves better!!) and Nox (who is a dragon)。 For what it’s worth, I really liked Tomás and Dani’s friendship and also the relationship between Dani and her childhood best friend, Sadie。 Both of those were really fun to read about and I wish we had gotten to see more of them! While we’re on the topic of relationships, I will say I wasn’t really a huge fan of either of the romances in the story? Both of them felt really underdeveloped and I couldn’t really find it in myself to care about either of them。 I also really wanted more from the sibling relationship between Dani and Eden because we keep being told that they love each other and care for each other, but beyond the first few chapters, that’s not really that evident?? The last thing I wanted to talk about is the plot and how none of it like,,, made sense lmao。 I think I pretty much covered this when I was talking about the magic system, but my biggest gripe with the plot is that the main conflict really,,, shouldn’t have been as big of a deal as it was, given the magic system。 I also think that the conflict was resolved very quickly after the climax, so the pacing definitely felt off to me with this book。 I just,,, am really sad because there was so much potential!! But the book didn’t really end up living up to it in any area。 I’m definitely going to be picking up more stuff from Destiny Soria in the future, but I am really let down by this one。 Hopefully I enjoy her future works more。 content warnings: torture, knife wounds, fire, burns, anxiety & panic attacks, violence, depictions of bloodrep: Latine bisexual MC, Latine MC with anxiety, Latine SCs 。。。more

Alright, I absolutely adored this book。 It was fast paced and kept me on my toes。 The relationship that formed was absolutely amazing。 I obviously want my very own soul bonded dragon! I actually liked all of the characters and glad we got to see Edens side。 If it was all from Dani's pov I would of absolutely hated her。 But she was a victim in her own way, if not a tad annoying at times。 Deep respect for Sophie, who was big inspiration for this book。 I just hope my own cat dragon gives me inspira Alright, I absolutely adored this book。 It was fast paced and kept me on my toes。 The relationship that formed was absolutely amazing。 I obviously want my very own soul bonded dragon! I loved this book。 It’s my been one of my favourite books this year, perhaps even my favourite, at least on par with mist born and the Thursday Murder Club (the other 2 most memorable books)。 The sister rivalry angle was so refreshing and I found myself really empathising with both, although I wished I could slap Eden at times! I received this ARC courtesy of Net Galley and Destiny Soria。 The review is my honest opinion and not influenced。 I rate this book a solid 4。5 stars!
